Huo Shan Huang Ya (霍山黄芽), literally translating to "Yellow Bud of Huo Mountain," is a rare and prestigious Chinese yellow tea originating from the Huoshan (Huo Mountain) region in Anhui Province. This tea shares its origin with the equally famous Huo Shan Huang Da Cha.
Unlike its counterpart Huo Shan Huang Da Cha, which is made from larger leaves, Huo Shan Huang Ya is crafted exclusively from the finest, tender golden buds (huang ya 黄芽). This careful selection and the specialized yellowing process result in a tea that is both rare and highly sought after by connoisseurs.
The tea is renowned for its distinctive yellowing process, which gives yellow teas their characteristic flavor and color. The finest grades are harvested before the Qingming Festival, ensuring the utmost tenderness and quality. It is considered one of China's top ten famous teas.
Subtle, sweet, floral, hints of orchid
Delicate, sweet, smooth, mellow, clean finish
Clean, sweet, with a lingering, refreshing aftertaste
The history of tea cultivation in the Huoshan region dates back over 1,000 years, making it one of the oldest documented tea-growing regions in China. The area is known for its unique microclimate, characterized by misty peaks, cool temperatures, and fertile soil.
The specific creation of Huo Shan Huang Ya as a distinct yellow tea style developed alongside the broader development of yellow tea processing techniques in China. The name "Huang Ya" (Yellow Bud) refers to the golden color of the young buds used in its production.
The tea gained recognition and became one of China's most famous teas, symbolizing the excellence of Anhui's tea culture. It has been a tribute tea and is now a protected geographical indication product.

Leaves are hand-picked very early in the morning during the Pre-Qingming period (early April). Only the finest single golden buds (huang ya) are selected to ensure tenderness and quality.
Fresh buds are spread out in thin layers and allowed to wither slightly in shaded areas, reducing moisture content and making them pliable for the next steps.
Buds are heated in large iron woks at high temperatures to halt initial oxidation and preserve the bud structure for the yellowing process.
This is the defining step for yellow tea. The fixed buds are wrapped in special paper or cloth and allowed to undergo a controlled, slow oxidation process in a humid environment. This unique step develops the characteristic yellow color and mellow, sweet flavor of yellow teas.
Final drying at lower temperatures removes remaining moisture and stabilizes the tea for storage, while preserving the shape and aroma.

The tea is traditionally recommended for reducing internal heat, improving digestion, and supporting overall well-being, especially during warmer seasons. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for most constitutions.
Like other yellow teas, Huo Shan Huang Ya contains high levels of catechins (especially EGCG), L-theanine, and antioxidants. The yellowing process may influence the bioavailability of certain compounds compared to green or black teas.
